Naso-temporal asymmetry of binocular inhibition.

چکیده
Binocular rivalry in the periphery of the visual field shows a distinct naso-temporal asymmetry that closely resembles the naso-temporal asymmetry of retinocortical projections. In convergent squint, the fovea of the deviating eye has to compete with the strong temporal hemifield of the contralateral eye. In divergent squint, the fovea competes with the much weaker nasal hemifield. Convergent squinters become amblyopic, but divergent ones seldom do.

Recentering bias for temporal saccades only: Evidence from binocular recordings of eye movements.
It is well known that the saccadic system presents multiple asymmetries. Notably, temporal (as opposed to nasal) saccades, centripetal (as opposed to centrifugal) saccades (i.e., the recentering bias) and saccades from the abducting eye (as opposed to the concomitant saccades from the adducting eye) exhibit higher peak velocities. However, these naso-temporal and centripetal-centrifugal asymmet...
متن کاملNaso-temporal asymmetry for signals invisible to the retinotectal pathway.
Monocular viewing conditions show an asymmetry between stimuli presented in the temporal and nasal visual fields in their efficiency for automatically triggering eye saccades and grasping attention. For instance, observers free to make a saccade to one of two stimuli presented together orient preferentially to the temporal stimulus. Such naso-temporal asymmetry (NTA) has been assumed to reflect...
متن کاملInfant eye movement asymmetries: Temporal-nasal asymmetry is reversed at isoluminance in 2-month-olds
Tested monocularly with luminance-modulated stimuli, young infants classically show a directional asymmetry of eye movements: optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and OKN-like eye movements are more reliably elicited by temporo-nasally- (T-N) than by naso-temporally- (N-T) directed stimuli. In the present experiment, 2-month-old infants were tested with isoluminant red-green gratings. A reverse asymmetr...
متن کاملEarly unilateral enucleation disrupts motion processing
Previous research has shown that unilaterally enucleated observers demonstrate better luminance-defined form perception compared to monocularly viewing controls, and similar performance to control observers viewing binocularly (Vision Res. 37(17) (1997) 2465). In Experiment 1 we asked whether the perception of form, where form is defined by other attributes than luminance, is also improved comp...
متن کاملRetinal and cortical patterns of spatial anisotropy in contrast sensitivity tasks
It has often been postulated that asymmetries in performance within the visual field (VF) are not characteristic of early visual processing. Here, human retinal (naso/temporal), cortical (left/right) and superior/inferior patterns of asymmetry were explored with achromatic contrast sensitivity (CS) tasks, that probed distinct spatiotemporal frequency channels. Low spatial, high temporal frequen...
